♥ Savvy Savin' Suppers ♥

I wanted to post a recipe for soup this week staying with our under $5 dollar budget.  The weather is cooling off just a bit and I am getting antsy to pull out my fall and winter recipes!  This recipe is one of my go to recipes on nights when we are really busy or we are feeling a little under the weather.  My family has been making this recipe for decades and decades.  My kids love it.

Hamburger Soup

2 lbs of Hamburger Meat
1 Medium Size Yellow Onion
2 Cans of Diced Tomato
1 Cup of Long Grain White Rice

Dice up your onion, place in pan.  Season Hamburger Meat with Salt and Pepper.  Brown Hamburger Meat with the Onions.  When meat is cooked fully, drain all rendered fat (grease).  Place Meat back in pan.  Add 2 cans of diced tomato's, 2 1/2 Quarts Water (10 Cups you may need more just make a judgement call) and Bring to a Boil.  Add Your Rice at that time.  Continue Boiling until Rice is tender.  Soups Done!

Breakdown

Hamburger Meat 2 lbs ($2.29)
One Yellow Onion (.32)
2 can's diced tomatoes ($1.60)
1 Cup Long Grain Rice (.33)

Total : $4.54

On the recipe, it doesn't have to be exact.  This is just about what I do.  I season to taste with Salt and Pepper, I sometimes add more hamburger meat or don't use as much depends on what I have.  It's soup and can easily be adapted to suit your pantry/freezer.

Tip:  I keep a bowl in my freezer for leftover vegetables.  If we have green beans, peas, corn whatever, I put it in this bowl and freeze it.  Ruffly once a month I make vegetable soup.  Normally the only thing I have to add is some meat and sometimes I don't add that.  The one thing about being frugal is not wasting, and I try my best not to do that.  I will try by then end of the month to share a Savvy Vegetable Soup Recipe!

Also if any of you try the recipes we post, please comment us and let us know how your family liked/disliked them.  Let us know if you made changes to the recipe.  Your change may help another person.

Blessings!

Holly :)
